The cooperative excitation of neighboring rare earth (RE) ions in optical crystals has been investigated from the 1960’s. In the cooperative absorption process, two neighboring RE ions are simultaneously excited by absorbing each a single photon with the required energy, whereas in the cooperative luminescence, two excited neighboring RE ions relax at the same time emitting a single photon. An other important process is the energy transfer between neighboring rare-earth ions in optical crystals. The candidate will examine these processes by classical and laser spectroscopic methods in RE doped oxide crystals e.g. LiNbO3 and Li6Y(BO3)3 and also make theoretical work for interpreting the experimental results.
