Excellent results in theoretical physics, especially quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and related subjects. The candidate must be familiar with the fundamentals of quantum many-body physics, and able to use programming environments such as Python, Matlab or Wolfam Mathematica to develop simulations.
Recent discoveries show that non-equilibrium dynamics of spin chains and ladders is profoundly altered by the presence of confining interactions. The goal is to study these effects in settings such as global and local quantum quenches, and in the presence of external driving. The student will approach the problems by combining exact methods with perturbation theory and semiclassical approximation, and also using numerical simulations of the time evolution.
