When a granular material is exposed to shear flow the particles rotate. Spherical particles rotate with a constant rotation rate, non-spherical (e.g. elongated) ones rotate with modulated rotation rate: faster rotation is observed when the long axis of the particle is perpendicular to the flow direction and slower rotation is seen when it is parallel to it. The rotation has a noisy character, since neighboring grains interact and hinder each-others rotation. The goal of the research is to characterize the noise in particle rotations for various shapes (e.g. prolate and oblate ellipsoids, or rods) as a function of particle aspect ratio. The work involves the development of a software (python, C, C++) for the analysis of two-dimensional images taken by a fast camera or three-dimensional arrays taken by X-ray Computed Tomography (X-Ray CT).
